Janice C. Maddox

This year makes Rosewoodís eighteenth Hanoverian inspection.  Janice started breeding Hanoverians and cross breeds in the 1970s due to the frustrations she saw in her students and the exaggerated efforts that were often required to train and succeed with average horses.  The goal was to create horses that could withstand the physical and mental demands of the highest levels of competition, and to more equally reflect, the efforts of her dedicated students.  Janice has been importing horses from Germany since the 1980s.  Her goal was for American riders to have the advantage of fine sport horses produced in the United States.

Rosewood's first imported Hanoverian mare was named Patricia (Perfekt-Gong).  Patricia won WPDA Horse of the Year at every level through third, and on a dare won a Training Level combined test, when challenged that dressage horses couldn't jump.  Patricia produced the first approved American bred hanoverian stallion, Medallion, who was also Best Young Horse Champion at Devon, Merrimac, who won Reserve Grand Champion at Devon, Meyerling who won Grand Champion at Latta, Duellglanz, ISR Approved Stallion, and  Darlington and Drushba, who have been Horses of the Year in Dressage.

Rosewood stands the Champion Hanoverian stallions, Dederick, Radiance, and Davanti.  Rosewood's breeding program has produced over nine Devon Championships, including two Reserve Grand Champions.  They have also won Championships at Raleigh, Richmond, Lexington, Atlanta, Latta, and numerous Hanoverian, USDF, and NCDCTA Horse of the Year Awards,  her horses and students have won hundreds of competitions, including championships in the Eastern and National Finals in Dressage, United States Pony Club National Rally in both dressage and eventing, 4H Club regional dressage rally, and,  PHA Hunter Horse of the Year, Open Jumper and Eventing Champions.

Janice has been involved with horses since early childhood.  She competed open jumpers, equitation and show hunters, eventing and dressage horses to championships in fourteen states.  Her favorite discipline is classical dressage riding and musical freestyle.  She was National Champion at Fourth Level Freestyle and AHSA/Insilco Reserve Champion at Fourth Level in 1987.  She won the NCDCTA Horse of the Year in 1988 at Intermediate 11 Freestyle.  Janice was a participating instructor at the Violet Hopkins USDF National Dressage Instructors Seminar and represented the Prix St. George Level.  She has also won numerous horse of the year awards on many horses and levels in dressage, and has earned the USDF Bronze and Silver Medals.

Janice is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and a graduate certified "Instructor" from the Morven Park International Equestrian Institute, were she was also a staff Instructor.  She is a board member of the Sedge field Hunt and fox hunts with her wonderful husband Kenneth aboard their homegrown Hanoverians.
