COLT


Male foal or young horse.


COLORS





Bay --  brown body with black points, i.e., legs, tips of ears, mane and tail.


Brown -- brown to black body, and bay who has black in coat.

Chestnut -- various colors of red brown, with matching mane and tail,
 or lighter manes and tails.

Black -- no brown on body.

Black-Brown -- black horse with brown on muzzle or flanks (sides).

Grey -- born dark and turns white with age.

Roan -- looks like a grey but doesnít turn white.


DAM


The mother of a horse.


ELITE MARE


Main stud book mares approved for breeding who have scored a minimum overall score of 7 on their inspection and a minimum overall score of 6 on the performance test.


ELITE STALLION


A horse from a main studbook mare, sired by an elite stallion.  An elite stallion has successfully fulfilled requirements of inspection and performance testing.  Only offspring from these stallions are eligible for registration.


FILLY


Female foal or young horse.


FOALS


Both sexes of horse babies.


GELDING


Castrated male horse.


HIP BRAND


Used to mark foals, placed on the left hip.

JC


Jockey Club, Registry for Thoroughbred (TB) horses.  Abbreviated ìXXî on the registry papers.


MAIN STUDBOOK


Mares approved for breeding, whose foals are eligible to be presented as stallions prospects and main stud book brood mare prospects.


MARE


Female horse capable of producing foals.


MARKINGS


Star, blaze, stripe, snip, socks, stockings.


NECK BRAND


Used to mark approved breeding horses.  Placed on left side of neck.  Commonly on mares, sometimes on stallions.  Left neck branded with breed logo of approved mares and stallions not currently being done in the USA unless requested.

Arabian


REGISTRY


Mares approved for breeding whose fillies are eligible for brood mare approval.  These mares want to score an overall 7 or better, with no group less than 5.  Thoroughbred, Arabian and other recognized warmblood mares are eligible for inspection.  Mares that score an overall 7 on inspection and performance tests, may be eligible for the studbook registry.


SIRE


Male horse capable of producing foals.


STALLION


Same as above.


ST. PR. ST. (S.P.S.)


STAATS PRAMIEN STUTE (STATES PREMIUM).  A main studbook mare who has secured sufficient scores at a breeding show in West Germany and is eligible for breederís incentive awards.


STUDBOOK


Mares approved for breeding whose fillies are eligible to be brood mare prospects.  Sufficient scores at mare approvals may raise those horses into the main stud book, allowing the mare to produce stallion prospects.


TRIANGLE


Marked off area where horses are shown for conformation and movement at inspections a dressage shows.
